Bernardo Kastrup. (1974 -) Dutch philosopher and computer scientist.

Unconscious

“The unconscious can be divided into two segments: the personal unconscious — which, like consciousness, is bound to a particular individual — and the collective unconscious.”

Causality

“We don’t see causality; we only see its manifest consequences in nature’s behavior. Therefore, the underlying organizing principle is metaphysical, instead of physical. It is derived on the basis of induction.”

Global Synchronization

“The possibility of there being a global synchronization mechanism in nature is opened up by quantum mechanics itself.”

Global Alignment

“It is impossible for physicists to identify global alignments... For although physicists can test individual events in the laboratory and verify that, when taken in isolation, the events are random, they wouldn’t be able to discern a global pattern within the complexity of the physical world at large; there are just too many ‘dice’ to keep track of under controlled laboratory conditions.”

Irreducible Patterns

“If there are such irreducible macroscopic patterns, they — unlike cause and effect — may not entail relationships of strict necessity, but tendencies, affinities or dispositions instead... We cannot expect to pin down the corresponding events on the basis of empirical regularities and counterfactual dependences. Not only may these events not be consistently repeatable, the global patterns they reflect may be excluded from experiments by our very efforts to isolate the experimental setup and control its conditions. We cannot induce these acausal events at will. The best we can do is to pay attention to the world around us, in the hope of noticing one of them as it spontaneously unfolds... Next to causality, the physical world organizes itself along archetypal correspondences of meaning, which break down the barrier between world and psyche.”

Parapsychology

“Today, based on the latest research, we know that parapsychological phenomena are indeed most likely real.”

Meaningful Coincidence

“Although I do believe that many — even most — experiences of meaningful coincidence are illusory, being mediated by relatively prosaic psychological mechanisms, my own experiences make it very difficult for me to dismiss Jung’s case. In the course of my life, the archetypal meaning occasionally evoked by events in the world around me — in precise alignment with my own inner state, or that of someone close to me — has been just too compelling to attribute to chance or cognitive bias.”

Synchronicity

“Synchronicity entails an equivalence of symbolic meaning between our inner psychic state and the concurrent physical state of the world surrounding us, as if they mirrored each other. This is metaphysically significant, for it abolishes the separation between world and psyche. Indeed, synchronicity suggests — if it doesn’t outright imply — a unity between psyche and physics.”

Metaphysically Real

“Synchronicity — insofar as it defines the structures or tendencies underlying all quantum events — is the only metaphysically real ordering principle in nature. The laws of nature we are familiar with in our daily lives become mere epiphenomena of archetypal synchronicities.”

Cosmic Mind

“He [Jung] is extrapolating the natural basis for cognitive associations in the psyche to a universal basis for the organization of all events in nature. He seems to regard the whole universe as a supraordinate cosmic mind — a ‘greater and more comprehensive consciousness’ — operating on the principle of association by similarity, just as the human psyche does.”

Philosophy and Evidence

“Philosophy must accommodate the evidence, not the other way around.”

Materialism

“Materialism is a metaphysical — not a scientific — hypothesis.”

  • Notes: In a footnote to this text Kastrup writes: “Indeed, materialism makes statements about what nature is in and of itself — namely, matter outside and independent of experience — not about how nature behaves. Science, in turn, occupies itself only with the latter question.”

Inverting Materialism

“Here we have Jung completely inverting the logic of mainstream materialism: it’s the psychic function that creates, maintains, and modifies the organic structure, not the other way around.”

Inner Life

“Jung’s point is that all we can ever ascertain is our own introspectively accessible phenomenal inner life, everything else being theory. However, as strictly correct as this may be, unless one is prepared to adopt solipsism — the notion that only one’s own personal experiences exist — and live accordingly, one cannot avoid metaphysical inferences of one sort or another. Even under idealism, one must metaphysically extrapolate the existence of experience beyond one’s own personal boundaries, so to account for the phenomenal inner lives of other living beings and the universe at large.”

Psyche Spectrum

“Jung invites us to think of the psyche as something analogous to the spectrum of light, which runs from the infra-red to the ultra-violet. In the middle of the spectrum, corresponding to visible light, we have the psyche proper. On the higher, ultra-violet end we have the spiritual psychoid. On the lower, infrared end we have the instinctual psychoid.”

Single Substrate

“Therefore, matter, psyche (including the psychoid) and spirit are all manifestations of a single substrate; they all share the same categorical basis; they are all constituted by the same intrinsic essence. Consequently, there is no room left for dualism.”
